Director: Santosh Sivan Origin: India, United Kingdom, United States Year: 2008 Duration: 98m Starring: Linus Roache, Leopold Benedict, Rahul Bose

An Englishman intent on opening a spice plantation in Kerala attempts to gain the trust of the local villagers and destroys numerous lives in the process in this period drama from director/cinematographer Sivan. The year is 1937, and the power that the English wield over the citizens of India can be devastating even in the mildest of cases. Henry Moores (Roache, PRIEST) is an entrepreneur who has singled out Kerala as the site of a potentially lucrative spice business. While he is busy attempting to realise his professional goals, his personal needs fall on the shoulders of his pretty housekeeper, Sajani (Das). One day, when their trip into the forest to collect honey takes a decidedly sensual turn, two local boys witness the erotically charged tryst and word eventually gets back to Sajani's husband.

Music: Léo Delibes, choreography: Frederick Ashton, conductor: Benjamin Pope, cast: Darcey Bussell, Roberto Bolle, Thiago Soares, Martin Harvey, Mara Galeazzi. Directed for screen by Ross MacGibbon, Recorded by the BBC 5th December 2005
Ashton's Sylvia was restored to the splendour of its elegant and opulent three-act form for the 75th anniversary celebrations of The Royal Ballet and it is now firmly back in the Company's repertory. Its story, from Greek myth, tells of Sylvia, whose vows of chastity mean she cannot return the love of the shepherd Aminta. Eros, up to his tricks, intervenes, only to see Sylvia abducted by the hunter Orion. Rescuing her, Eros finally brings the lovers together.
Ashton was inspired by the music of Léo Delibes to create such great choreographic sequences as the famous Act III pas de deux and the role of the mischievous Eros, one of those delightful, darkly comic characterisations for which Ashton became known and loved. With Margot Fonteyn as his original Sylvia, Ashton made the title role a wonderful showcase for virtuosity, invention and classical beauty. And it is indeed a beautiful ballet to look at - the epitome of Ashton style in stage settings of great detail and painterly splendour.
