LOVE LETTERS AND LIVE WIRES: HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE GPO FILM UNIT (U)
Sunday 21 September, 4.00
In 1933, the General Post Office made history by founding its own film production unit. The GPO Film Unit would become internationally renowned as a centre for creative, exciting public-information films, leaving us perhaps the most evocative record of the 1930s zeitgeist on celluloid.
This selection of some of The GPO's greatest short films, newly restored by the BFI National Archive, showcases the Unit's sheer range: from quintessential documentary (NIGHT MAIL) to avant-garde animation (TRADE TATTOO) and even musical comedy (THE FAIRY OF THE PHONE).
Made by such varied talents as Grierson, Cavalcanti, Len Lye and Norman McLaren, the films bring alive a revolution in mass communications as epoch-changing then as the internet is now.

Director: Jonathan Levine Origin: United States Year: 2008 Duration: 110m Starring: Famke Janssen, Josh Peck, Ben Kingsley

It's the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are filled with the sounds of hip-hop and the sweet aroma of marijuana - but change is in the air. The newly inaugurated mayor, Rudy Giuliani, is beginning to implement his anti-fun initiatives against "crimes" such as noisy portable radios, graffiti and public drunkenness. Against this backdrop, Luke Shapiro (Peck) spends his last summer before college selling dope throughout New York City, trading it with his shrink (Kingsley, SEXY BEAST) for therapy, while crushing on his stepsister (Thirlby). Famke Janssen, Mary Kate Olsen and Method Man round out the cast in this edgy, bittersweet and funny coming-of-age story.

Director: Nic Balthazar Origin: Belgium, Netherlands Year: 2007 Duration: 93m Starring: Laura Verlinden, Marijke Pinoy, Greg Timmermans, Pol Goossen

Ben (Timmermans) is different. He is mildly autistic and his life is full of strange rituals. He lives in his own world, which is half the time located online, in the galaxy of computer games. School is a daily hell for Ben, where two bullies make his existence thoroughly miserable. Fuelled by his signature video game and inspired by Scarlite, his mystery girl on the web, Ben devises a cunning plan to change his life and that of his tormentors. The film is based on Balthazar's own bestselling Belgian novel that also spawned a hit play. Evocative of DONNIE DARKO, this is an intelligent and visually assured look at adolescent alienation.

Director: Guillermo Toro Origin: United States Year: 2008 Duration: 120m Starring: Luke Goss, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, Ron Perlman

With a signature blend of action, humour and character-based spectacle, the saga of the kitten-loving hero from Hell continues to unfold. Bigger muscle, badder weapons and more ungodly villains arrive in an epic vision from Oscar-nominated director del Toro (PAN'S LABYRINTH). After an ancient truce existing between humankind and the invisible realm of the fantastic is broken, hell on Earth is ready to erupt. A ruthless leader who treads the worlds above and below defies his bloodline and awakens an unstoppable army of creatures. Now, it's up to the planet's toughest, roughest superhero to battle the merciless dictator and his marauders. He may be red. He may be horned. He may be misunderstood. But when you need the job done right, it's time to call in Hellboy.

Director: Shane Meadows Origin: United Kingdom Year: 2008 Duration: 71m Starring: Kate Dickie, Thomas Turgoose, Piotr Jagiello, Ireneusz Czop

The latest film from Meadows is a look at the transition from childhood to adulthood and the hostilities of urban living. Tommo (Turgoose), just turned 16 and released from social care, runs away to London from a difficult life in Nottingham. Marek (Jagiello), a Polish immigrant, lives with his father, who drinks with his friends after working on a construction site. The quiet and sensitive Marek is not comfortable in his father's world. Both boys struggle to make sense of their new environment and a chance meeting in Somers Town leads them to form an unexpected partnership. The film's frequently uncompromising portrait of the realities of life for those on the margins of society is leavened by Meadows' characteristic humour and sympathy for his characters.

Director: James Marsh Origin: United Kingdom Year: 2008 Duration: 95m Starring: David Frank, Ardis Campbell, Philippe Petit, David Demato

On 7 August 1974, a 24-year-old French high-wire artist named Philippe Petit performed one of the most astonishing stunts of the late 20th century: he strung a thin cable between the two towers of the World Trade Center and not only walked across from one building to another, but also executed a nerve-wracking series of knee-bends and acrobatic movements on the cable, some 1,350 feet above the ground, before turning himself in. This took place to the consternation and vexation of Port Authority policemen, who immediately arrested Petit for the act - prompting many to dub his stunt "the artistic crime of the century". James Marsh's (WISCONSIN DEATH TRIP, THE KING) riveting and beautifully shot documentary revisits and recounts the chain of events some 34 years after they occurred.

Director: Santosh Sivan Origin: India, United Kingdom, United States Year: 2008 Duration: 98m Starring: Linus Roache, Leopold Benedict, Rahul Bose

An Englishman intent on opening a spice plantation in Kerala attempts to gain the trust of the local villagers and destroys numerous lives in the process in this period drama from director/cinematographer Sivan. The year is 1937, and the power that the English wield over the citizens of India can be devastating even in the mildest of cases. Henry Moores (Roache, PRIEST) is an entrepreneur who has singled out Kerala as the site of a potentially lucrative spice business. While he is busy attempting to realise his professional goals, his personal needs fall on the shoulders of his pretty housekeeper, Sajani (Das). One day, when their trip into the forest to collect honey takes a decidedly sensual turn, two local boys witness the erotically charged tryst and word eventually gets back to Sajani's husband.

Director: Liam Lynch Origin: United States Year: 2008 Duration: 72m Starring: Sarah Silverman

Fresh from her recent 'dalliance' with Matt Damon, the controversially hip US comedienne, Sarah Silverman, stars in JESUS IS MAGIC, her first stand-up comedy movie. Silverman's comic persona is that of a self-centred hipster, brash and clueless about her own political incorrectness. The film showcases Sarah live on stage in L.A. at the height of her comic powers, and begins and ends with her in conversation with two friends: at the start, she's the loser compared with their recent artistic successes; by the end, she's the star, in her dressing room, dismissive and cutting.

Director: Cristian Nemescu Origin: Romania Year: 2007 Duration: 154m Starring: Armand Assante, Jamie Elman, Razvan Vasilescu

An astonishing debut feature, Nemescu's bold and brilliant satire has modern-day Romania and US foreign policy firmly in its sights. In 1999, a secret NATO train filled with US Marines is halted by a bolshy local station master-cum-black marketeer. What follows is a rambunctious Balkan farce that shades inexorably into tragedy as the soldiers and the townspeople try to fraternise. A happy outcome was never possible and, as the town implodes, the Americans move blithely on to Kosovo, unaware of the violence they have unleashed. Sadly, this will be Nemescu's only feature, as both he and his sound editor were killed in a car crash while still working on the film.

Director: Andrei Zvyagintsev Origin: Russian Federation Year: 2008 Duration: 157m Starring: Maria Bonnevie, Aleksandr Baluyev, Konstantin Lavronenko

Zvyaguintsev follows up THE RETURN with another masterpiece, a hypnotic story full of mood and ambiguity about a marriage undone by masculine pride. After a long absence, Alex (Lavronenko) and Vera (Bonnevie) return with their two children to his father's country house, a seemingly idyllic spot. When Vera makes an unforeseen confession, Alex faces a moral dilemma, and in enlisting his brother's help he sets off a tragic chain of events. From its stunning opening shot the film unfolds at a languorous pace, feeding the sense of inevitability and dread, and allowing the performances to shine. Bonnevie is particularly impressive as Vera, whose own side of these scenes from a marriage only takes shape once the tragedy is in train.
