Director: Morgan Spurlock Origin: France Year: 2008 Duration: 90m

After revealing just what a diet of Big Macs can do to a person in SUPER SIZE ME, filmmaker Spurlock takes a tongue-in-cheek look at another threat to our collective wellbeing. When Spurlock's wife become pregnant, he feels that he wants his child to grow up in a safer world and so takes it upon himself to track down the most dangerous man on Earth, Osama bin Laden. Spurlock flies to the Middle East in search of his quarry, making stops in Egypt, Morocco, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and Pakistan as he keeps an eye peeled for the head of Al Qaeda. When he isn't playing sleuth, he interviews people representing all walks of life, quizzing them about the nature of the post-9/11 conflict and the need for peace, in what proves to be a witty, inventive and illuminating documentary.

Director: Marjane Satrapi, Vincent Paronnaud Origin: France Year: 2007 Duration: 96m Starring: Catherine Deneuve, Sean Penn, Chiara Mastroianni, Iggy Pop

An expressionistic animation stunningly drawn in black and white, PERSEPOLIS is a touching coming-of-age story about an intelligent, outspoken girl growing up during the Iranian revolution. Paronnaud and Satrapi's debut feature tells of how fundamentalists seized power, forced the veil on women and imprisoned thousands of dissidents. The film is based on Satrapi's series of graphic novels and her childhood experiences in Iran, where she survived traumatic encounters with schoolteachers bent on denying her expression, policemen determined to deny her freedom and Iraqi bombs intended to take her life. Dedicated to the people of Iran, PERSEPOLIS is a moving, universally appealing story of one woman's struggle against oppression that deservedly shared the jury prize at Cannes in 2007.

Director: Mike Leigh Origin: United Kingdom Year: 2008 Duration: 118m Starring: Eddie Marsan, Sally Hawkins

Poppy (Hawkins) is an irrepressible 30-something enjoying her life in Camden. Whether out on her bike, preparing lessons for her primary school class, or drinking with friends in the local, she keeps a smile on her face and a joke on her lips. She is happy with her life and determined to get the most out of every day. When her bicycle is stolen, she decides to invest in driving lessons, which will bring her face-to-face with a character and a world view quite unlike her own. Compared with Leigh's previous works, HAPPY-GO-LUCKY presents a calmer, more optimistic take on contemporary Britain, where individualism and the pursuit of happiness define the lives of a generation, but where old-fashioned notions of community and selflessness still exist.

Director: Leonard Abrahamson Origin: Ireland Year: 2007 Duration: 85m Starring: Anne-Marie Duff, Pat Shortt, Conor Ryan

GARAGE weaves tragedy with comedy to present a beautifully drawn tale from the margins of contemporary rural Irish life. Regarded by his neighbours as a harmless misfit, Josie (Shortt) has spent all his adult life as the caretaker of a crumbling petrol station. One summer his world suffers a shift when a teenager, David (Ryan), comes to work with him. Initially performing their menial tasks in silence, they tentatively open up, and suddenly Josie is drinking cans by the railway tracks with the local kids. This awakens dormant needs in Josie, leading to his awkward tilt at intimacy with shop girl Carmel (Duff). Tender though never sentimental, this tautly scripted, naturalistically photographed film withstands comparison to the work of the Dardenne brothers.

Director: Victor Erice Origin: Spain Year: 1973 Duration: 98m Starring: Fernando Gómez, Teresa Gimpera, Ana Torrent, Isabel Telleria

Widely regarded as a masterpiece of Spanish cinema, this allegorical tale is set in a remote village in the 1940s. The life in the village is calm and uneventful -- as is Spanish life after General Franco's victory in the Civil War. While their father (Fernando Fernán Gómez) studies bees in his beehive and their mother (Teresa Gimpera) writes letters to a non-existent correspondent, two young girls, Ana (Ana Torrent) and Isabel (Isabel Telleria), go to see James Whale's Frankenstein at a local cinema. Though they can hardly understand the concept, both girls are deeply impressed with the moment when a little girl gives a flower to the monster. Isabel, the older sister, tells Ana that the monster actually exists as a spirit that you can't see unless you know how to approach him. Ana starts wandering around the countryside in search of the kind creature. Instead, she meets an army deserter, who is hiding in a barn. The film received critical accolades for its subtle and masterful use of cinematic language and the expressive performance of the young Ana Torrent.

Director: Anne Fletcher Origin: United States Year: 2008 Duration: 111m Starring: Edward Burns, James Marsden, Malin Akerman, Katherine Heigl

Frothy and funny, 27 DRESSES is a romantic comedy that continues the rise to stardom of Katherine Heigl (KNOCKED UP). Ever since her childhood, when she started serving as surrogate mum to her younger sister following their mother's death, Jane (Heigl) has been a tireless provider of support and assistance for all in her orbit. Her chronic selflessness and attentiveness to detail have made her the perfect bridesmaid for her friends -- more than two dozen of them, actually -- and an invaluable assistant for George (Burns), who is blissfully oblivious to his employee's infatuation. When Tess (Akerman), Jane's sexy, self-absorbed sibling, attracts the attention of George, he becomes so smitten he proposes before really getting to know her. Guess whom Tess asks to be her bridesmaid?
