Director: Francois Ozon Origin: Belgium, France, United Kingdom Year: 2008 Duration: 120m Starring: Romola Garai, Charlotte Rampling, Sam Neill

Set in Edwardian England from 1905 onwards, ANGEL traces the career of would-be novelist Angel Deverell (Garai, ATONEMENT), whose blithe innocence of the ways of the world doesn't stop her pen from spilling forth torrid romantic fantasies. Angel's literary career is a runaway success, and the headstrong ingénue becomes the Barbara Cartland of her time. Wealth, fame and love come her way, but the one thing that continues to evade her is wisdom. Garai is spirited, affecting and finally troubling in a role that might have honoured Bette Davis in her youthful heyday. An unexpected change of direction from Ozon (EIGHT WOMEN), this is a brave and bracing rags-to-riches melodrama.

Director: Paddy Considine Origin: United Kingdom Year: 2008 Duration: 17m Starring: Peter Mullan, Karl Johnson, Olivia Colman

BIFA and BAFTA-winning short film DOG ALTOGETHER (dir. Paddy Considine, 17min) precedes the screening of Shane Meadows' SOMERS TOWN. The latest film from Meadows is a look at the transition from childhood to adulthood and the hostilities of urban living. Tommo (Turgoose), just turned 16 and released from social care, runs away to London from a difficult life in Nottingham. Marek (Jagiello), a Polish immigrant, lives with his father, who drinks with his friends after working on a construction site. The quiet and sensitive Marek is not comfortable in his father's world. Both boys struggle to make sense of their new environment and a chance meeting in Somers Town leads them to form an unexpected partnership. The film's frequently uncompromising portrait of the realities of life for those on the margins of society is leavened by Meadows' characteristic humour and sympathy for his characters.

Director: Isabel Coixet Origin: United States Year: 2008 Duration: 111m Starring: Patricia Clarkson, Ben Kingsley, Penelope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard

Adapted from Philip Roth's novella 'The Dying Animal', a cruel anatomisation of sexual obsession and a study of male foibles and attitudes towards women, the exquisitely performed ELEGY features Sir Ben Kingsley at his peerless best. He plays Kepesh, a professor who falls for Cruz's intelligent and beautiful grad student, only to find her sheer loveliness an impossible challenge to his ego. The direction from Coixet is faultlessly restrained and the supporting performances from Hopper and Clarkson are riveting. Scripted by Nicholas Meyer, the film also audaciously takes a more feminist tract, emphasising what Kepesh cannot see: the emotional void at the centre of his obsession. Crisply shot by Jean-Claude Larrieu, this is an elegant and challenging modern romance.

Director: José Padilha Origin: Brazil Year: 2007 Duration: 114m Starring: Wagner Moura, André Ramiro, Caio Junqueira

In response to the extreme drug-related violence of Rio's favelas, the Brazilian government formed a paramilitary force, BOPE (Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais, or Special Police Operations Battalion), to take matters into its own hands. Padilha's (BUS 174) Berlin prize-winning drama ELITE SQUAD takes viewers inside BOPE to make a scathing indictment of the cycle of violence that permeates Brazilian society. Moura (CARANDIRU) stars as Captain Nascimento, the leader of a BOPE unit who is considering retirement in the face of his impending fatherhood. In an effort to pick his successor, he looks to two younger recruits, part-time law student André Matias (Ramiro) and the bellicose hood Neto (Junqueira). But he soon realised that the naïve men will need to mature before they could take the reins.

Director: James Marsh Origin: United Kingdom Year: 2008 Duration: 95m Starring: David Frank, Ardis Campbell, Philippe Petit, David Demato

On 7 August 1974, a 24-year-old French high-wire artist named Philippe Petit performed one of the most astonishing stunts of the late 20th century: he strung a thin cable between the two towers of the World Trade Center and not only walked across from one building to another, but also executed a nerve-wracking series of knee-bends and acrobatic movements on the cable, some 1,350 feet above the ground, before turning himself in. This took place to the consternation and vexation of Port Authority policemen, who immediately arrested Petit for the act - prompting many to dub his stunt "the artistic crime of the century". James Marsh's (WISCONSIN DEATH TRIP, THE KING) riveting and beautifully shot documentary revisits and recounts the chain of events some 34 years after they occurred.

Director: Andrei Zvyagintsev Origin: Russian Federation Year: 2008 Duration: 157m Starring: Maria Bonnevie, Aleksandr Baluyev, Konstantin Lavronenko

Zvyaguintsev follows up THE RETURN with another masterpiece, a hypnotic story full of mood and ambiguity about a marriage undone by masculine pride. After a long absence, Alex (Lavronenko) and Vera (Bonnevie) return with their two children to his father's country house, a seemingly idyllic spot. When Vera makes an unforeseen confession, Alex faces a moral dilemma, and in enlisting his brother's help he sets off a tragic chain of events. From its stunning opening shot the film unfolds at a languorous pace, feeding the sense of inevitability and dread, and allowing the performances to shine. Bonnevie is particularly impressive as Vera, whose own side of these scenes from a marriage only takes shape once the tragedy is in train.

Director: Jonathan Levine Origin: United States Year: 2008 Duration: 110m Starring: Famke Janssen, Josh Peck, Ben Kingsley

It's the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are filled with the sounds of hip-hop and the sweet aroma of marijuana - but change is in the air. The newly inaugurated mayor, Rudy Giuliani, is beginning to implement his anti-fun initiatives against "crimes" such as noisy portable radios, graffiti and public drunkenness. Against this backdrop, Luke Shapiro (Peck) spends his last summer before college selling dope throughout New York City, trading it with his shrink (Kingsley, SEXY BEAST) for therapy, while crushing on his stepsister (Thirlby). Famke Janssen, Mary Kate Olsen and Method Man round out the cast in this edgy, bittersweet and funny coming-of-age story.
